The Tesla Wall Connector is available in Tesla connector configurations that serve Tesla and other NACS-equipped vehicles. Tesla's Universal Wall Connector adds an integrated J1772 adapter for compatible J1772 vehicles. Vehicle, connector, and adapter compatibility should be confirmed before equipment is ordered. Tesla publishes a maximum of 48 amps and 11.5 kW on a properly designed 60-amp circuit. Actual range added per hour depends on the vehicle, onboard charger, circuit setting, battery conditions, and other factors.

What a complete installation includes

Site assessment and load calculation

Before any equipment is ordered, our electrician evaluates:

  • Service rating, existing calculated load, panel condition, available spaces, other large loads, charging needs, and approved load management
  • Available space at the main panel for a new 60A breaker
  • The route from the panel to the proposed charger location (garage wall, exterior wall, freestanding)
  • Whether your existing service can accommodate an additional 60A continuous load (NEC Section 220 load calculation)
  • The right location for the connector (proximity to where the vehicle parks, weather exposure, accessibility)

For homes that cannot accommodate the full 60A circuit, the Tesla Wall Connector can be configured for lower amperages during commissioning. The Wall Connector supports 16A, 24A, 32A, 40A, and 48A circuit configurations.

Electrical work

A licensed electrician performs the service and load calculation, selects conductors and overcurrent protection for the actual route and installation method, confirms current code and manufacturer instructions, and determines permit and inspection requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction.

Connector mounting and commissioning

Tesla's NACS standard and non-Tesla compatibility

Tesla opened its connector standard (now called NACS) to the broader EV industry in 2022. Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, and many others have committed to adopting NACS for their vehicles. As of 2026, many newer non-Tesla EVs ship with NACS ports natively, while older non-Tesla EVs can use a NACS-to-J1772 adapter on a Tesla Wall Connector.

For households with multiple EVs, this means a single Tesla Wall Connector can serve both Tesla and (with adapters or NACS-equipped vehicles) other brands.

Power sharing with multiple connectors

Compatible Gen 3 Wall Connectors can be commissioned as a group to stay within a configured site-current limit. Power allocation changes with the connected vehicles and group settings, so do not promise an equal 24-amp split or describe every installation as one shared branch circuit.

NEC code compliance basics

The National Electrical Code (NEC) governs all EV charger installations:

  • Dedicated circuit (no other loads on the same breaker)
  • Continuous load rated at 125 percent (a 48A connector requires a 60A breaker)
  • Ground-fault protection: hardwired Wall Connectors use internal ground-fault protection (CCID per UL 2231); the NEC GFCI-breaker requirement applies to plug-in receptacle installations, and Tesla advises against an upstream GFCI breaker on hardwired units to prevent nuisance tripping
  • Service load calculation to confirm the home's electrical service can support the new load
  • Proper conductor sizing per NEC Article 310
