Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your plumbing if you're not prepared. Follow these steps to winterize your pipes:
- Insulate exposed pipes – Use foam pipe insulation to prevent freezing.
- Drain outdoor hoses & faucets – Shut off outdoor water valves and store hoses.
- Keep cabinets open – Allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
- Set your thermostat to at least 55°F – Avoid freezing when away.
- If you have a boiler (Forced hot water) don't use alternative heat such as pellet stoves or mini splits in prolonged cold temperatures. Your system needs to run to avoid freezing.
- Have a professional add antifreeze if you are leaving for an extended time or if your heating system is prone to freezing.
- Know how to shut off your water – In case of a burst pipe, act fast.
