Heat Pump Cost Comparison

See How A Heat Pump Compares In New Hampshire

If you heat with oil, propane, natural gas, or wood in New Hampshire, it can be hard to tell which option is really costing you the most. Prices move around every season, and every fuel is billed in a different way.

A.J. LeBlanc’s Heat Pump Cost Comparison Calculator turns all of those fuels into the same simple number so you can compare your current system to a modern heat pump. It starts with typical New Hampshire prices, and you can change any field to match your own bills and see how the cost to run a heat pump stacks up against oil, propane, natural gas, and cord wood.

These starting values are based on common prices in New Hampshire. Leave them as they are for a quick example or update them with your own numbers. When you tap or click the button, the table and bar chart will update and show which option is expected to cost the least to run.

Fuel Prices And System Efficiency
Dollars per gallon
Approximate AFUE or real world efficiency for your boiler or furnace
Dollars per gallon
Many newer furnaces and boilers are in the low to mid 90s

High efficiency gas equipment is often between about 90 and 98 percent
Dollars per cord of seasoned hardwood
Depends on the stove or boiler and how it is used day to day

How The Calculator Compares Different Fuels

Heat Pump Conversion to BTUs

Everything Is Converted To BTUs

Oil is sold by the gallon, gas by the therm, wood by the cord, and electricity by the kilowatt hour. To compare them in a way that makes sense, we convert each fuel into BTUs of usable heat. For example, a gallon of oil has around 138,500 BTU and one kilowatt hour of electricity has about 3,412 BTU.

After that, we factor in the efficiency of your equipment or the COP of your heat pump. The result is an estimate of what you pay to get the same amount of heat into your living space, no matter which fuel you choose.

Heat Pump vs Oil Boiler

Why Heat Pumps Are Often More Efficient

A heat pump does not burn fuel to make heat. It uses electricity to move heat between inside and outside. That is why we talk about COP instead of a simple efficiency percentage. A COP of 3 means you get about three units of heat for every one unit of electrical energy that the system uses.

With a modern cold climate system that is sized and installed correctly, this performance can hold up for a large part of a New Hampshire winter. That is what often allows a heat pump to compete with or even beat the cost of fuels like oil or propane.

Adjust The Calculator To Match Your Home

No two homes are exactly the same. One house might have an older oil boiler, another might have a new propane furnace, and a third might heat mostly with wood. That is why the calculator lets you change both the fuel price and the efficiency of each system.

If you are not sure what to enter, start with the defaults for a quick feel. Then you can call our team and we can help you look at your actual equipment, fuel history, and weather data for a more detailed comparison.

How A Heat Pump Compares To Other Heating Fuels

Heat Pump And Heating Oil

Many homes in New Hampshire still run on oil. When oil prices climb, winter bills can rise very quickly. A heat pump shifts much of that load over to electricity instead of delivered fuel. In homes with older oil equipment that is less efficient, the cost difference can be even more noticeable once a heat pump carries most of the heating hours.

Heat Pump And Propane

Propane can heat very well, but the fuel itself often costs more per unit of energy than oil or gas. A cold climate heat pump multiplies the amount of heat you get from each kilowatt hour of electricity. In many cases that is enough to make the heat pump competitive with propane on operating cost, especially during milder weather in the fall and spring.

Heat Pump And Natural Gas

Natural gas is often one of the least expensive fuels on a cost per BTU basis, especially with a modern high efficiency gas furnace or boiler. Even so, many homes still benefit from a hybrid setup. The heat pump can handle the majority of the season, while the gas system steps in during very cold stretches. This gives you comfort, backup heat, and more control over your long term energy costs.

Heat Pump And Cord Wood

Wood heat can be very economical if you cut or source your own wood, but it takes time and effort. A heat pump adds a simple, thermostat controlled option that keeps the house comfortable when you are sleeping, at work, or away. Many homeowners keep their wood stove for the feel of a fire and let the heat pump carry more of the routine heating load.

Rebates, Tax Credits, And Long Term Savings

When you think about a new system, the installation cost is only part of the story. You also want to look at what you will spend on fuel or electricity every winter for the next decade or more. New Hampshire utility programs and federal tax credits can reduce the cost of qualifying heat pump installations. When you combine those incentives with lower operating costs, a heat pump can have a very reasonable payback compared to replacing an older oil or propane system with another fuel only unit.

Our team keeps track of current rebates, tax credits, and program rules so you do not have to. We can walk you through what you qualify for, what equipment makes sense, and how everything fits into your budget.

How A Heat Pump Heats Your Home

The easiest way to picture a heat pump is to think about your air conditioner running in reverse. In cooling mode, it moves heat from inside your home to the outside. In heating mode, it pulls heat out of the outside air and brings it in. Even when it feels cold outside, there is still useful heat energy that a modern system can capture and move indoors.

Because the system is moving heat instead of creating it by burning fuel, it can deliver more heat energy than the electrical energy you buy. That is why a heat pump can have a COP that is higher than one and why it often shows very strong efficiency compared to traditional heating equipment.

Is A Heat Pump A Good Fit For Your Home?

You are likely to benefit from a heat pump if any of these describe you:

  • You heat with oil, propane, or electric baseboard heat.
  • Your existing furnace or boiler is getting old or needs frequent repairs.
  • You would like to add or upgrade air conditioning at the same time you update heating.
  • You want to cut your use of delivered fuels and have more predictable energy costs.

A.J. LeBlanc Heating designs and installs heat pump systems specifically for New Hampshire homes and weather. We can look at your current bills, your home, and your comfort goals and then lay out clear options so you can decide what makes the most sense.

Keeping Your Heat Pump Running Smoothly

Like a boiler, furnace, or air conditioner, a heat pump needs regular care. Annual maintenance keeps coils clean, checks refrigerant levels, and makes sure all components are working the way they should. This helps the system stay efficient and quiet and can extend its life.

Our heat pump technicians handle yearly tune ups as well as troubleshooting and repairs. Routine service helps protect your investment and keeps your home comfortable in both heating and cooling seasons.
