Are HVAC Maintenance Plans Worth It? Rate Lock Explained

An HVAC maintenance plan is an arrangement with a contractor that covers the regular tune-ups your heating and cooling equipment needs, usually in exchange for a monthly fee, a prepaid contract, or a scheduling commitment. Whether a plan is worth it depends almost entirely on which of those structures you are signing up for. At A.J. LeBlanc Heating, our version is called Rate Lock: a discount program for southern New Hampshire customers who schedule their maintenance outside our peak times, in exchange for a locked, reduced rate on the visit.

Here is how typical maintenance plans are structured, how Rate Lock works, and the honest math on whether any of it is worth your money.

What an HVAC maintenance plan usually looks like

Across the trade, maintenance plans (also sold as service plans, comfort clubs, or memberships) typically bundle a few things: one or two tune-up visits per year, a discount on repairs, and priority scheduling, all paid for through a monthly or annual fee collected up front.

Maintenance plans are not inherently wrong. But the prepaid structure has the same weakness we described in our post on time and material billing: the customer pays first and hopes the value shows up later. A membership only pays off if you use every included visit, and a bundled repair discount can quietly become a reason to recommend repairs.

How LeBlanc's Rate Lock program works

Rate Lock is simpler: a discount program for customers who schedule outside our peak times. To qualify for Rate Lock pricing, you schedule your maintenance during the allotted time frames given by our office. Ask us for the current enrollment terms when you sign up.

The process for the enrollment cycle posted on our Rate Lock page:

1. Submit the request form at leblanchvac.com/ratelock with your system type and any add-ons.
2. Our office sends out Rate Lock invitations with the available time frames. Allow up to a week for a response; we typically receive thousands of requests.
3. Schedule within the window offered and reference the Rate Lock offer at the time of scheduling.
4. Pay the locked rate for the visit.

Rate Lock maintenance pricing

The Rate Lock rates published on our enrollment page:

• Air conditioning maintenance: $145
• Gas furnace or gas boiler maintenance: $155
• Oil furnace or oil boiler maintenance: $205 (includes the oil filter, nozzle, strainer, and cleaning solvents; oil treatment is extra)
• Mini-split maintenance: $145 per hour for a single system

Gas tankless water heater maintenance, Generac generator maintenance, and add-ons such as oil water heater service, tankless flushes, and power venter cleaning are also listed on the enrollment page. Every Rate Lock tune-up includes a standard MERV 7 air filter where applicable, plus cleaning and safety checks per the manufacturer's specifications and our own.

For comparison, a stand-alone HVAC tune-up in southern NH typically runs $150 to $300. Rate Lock puts the air conditioning visit below the bottom of that range, with no membership dues attached.

The honest economics of off-peak scheduling

Here is why we can offer a lower rate without cutting corners. HVAC demand in New Hampshire is brutally seasonal: no-heat calls stack up during January cold snaps in Manchester and Concord, no-cool calls stack up during July heat waves in Nashua and Salem, and tune-up requests cluster in the few weeks right before each season. A service company has to staff for those peaks, which means the off-peak weeks have technician hours available.

Rate Lock fills those hours. You give us scheduling flexibility; we give you a locked, discounted rate. It is the same reasoning behind our time and material billing: let efficient operations show up on the customer's invoice instead of in padded pricing.

So are HVAC maintenance plans worth it?

The maintenance itself is clearly worth it. A gas furnace should be serviced once a year, an air conditioner once a year in spring, and a heat pump twice a year. Most manufacturer warranties require documented annual professional service. A tuned furnace can use up to 15 percent less fuel, a neglected AC can use up to 30 percent more electricity, and a pitted contactor or weak capacitor caught in spring is a quick, inexpensive part swap instead of an emergency call on a 90°F Saturday.

Whether the plan wrapper is worth it comes down to structure. A prepaid membership pays off only if you use every included visit and the bundled discounts do not steer you into work you did not need. Rate Lock keeps it simple: the equipment gets the same complete tune-up, and you pay less because you helped us schedule it sensibly.

A one-way trip fee may apply for job sites outside our 30-mile service area, which covers Manchester, Bedford, Nashua, Concord, Salem, Auburn, and the surrounding towns.
