Hard Water, Iron, and Manganese: How to Tell the Difference
White scale on a faucet, orange staining in a sink, and dark marks in a toilet may all be described as bad well water. They are not the same problem. Hardness, iron, and manganese behave differently and may require different treatment.

What hard water looks like
Hardness is mainly associated with dissolved calcium and magnesium. It commonly leaves white or gray scale on faucets, shower glass, heating elements, and fixtures. Soap may lather poorly, and homeowners may notice spotting on dishes or a stiff feeling in laundry.
Hard water is not the same as sediment. The minerals are dissolved, so a basic particle filter does not remove them. A water softener uses ion exchange to reduce hardness minerals and must be sized for the measured hardness and household water demand.

What iron looks like
Iron may leave orange, red, or brown staining. Water can emerge clear and develop color after exposure to air, or it may already carry visible particles. It can also affect taste and build deposits in fixtures, treatment equipment, and water-using appliances.
The form and concentration of iron matter. NHDES identifies oxidation followed by filtration as a common treatment approach. In some situations, a softener can handle limited iron along with hardness, but using a softener as the default iron filter may waste salt and create maintenance problems.
What manganese looks like
Manganese often produces dark brown or black staining. It may appear in toilet tanks, laundry, sinks, and other places where water sits or contacts air. Like iron, manganese may be dissolved, particulate, or present in more than one form.
NHDES explains that treatment selection depends on the raw-water level, physical form, and other water conditions. Manganese often requires strong oxidation before filtration. That is one reason equipment should be selected from test results rather than stain color alone.
Why homes can have more than one problem
A well can contain hardness, iron, and manganese at the same time. It may also contain sediment, low pH, sulfur-related odor, or other contaminants that affect the treatment sequence. A filter that performs well on iron may not soften the water. A softener selected for hardness may not be the best answer for a high manganese level.

Iron is a common cause, but old piping, water-heater sediment, or another source can produce similar discoloration. Testing and inspection confirm the cause.
Does a sediment filter remove hardness?
No. Sediment filtration captures particles. Hardness minerals are dissolved and normally require a softening or other treatment process designed for them.
Can a water softener remove iron and manganese?
A softener may reduce limited amounts under suitable water conditions, especially when hardness is also present. Higher levels or different forms may require oxidation and filtration instead.
Why does clear water turn orange after sitting?
