Low water pressure is not one problem with one answer. The cause may be outside the house, at the point where water enters, or somewhere in the piping and fixtures. The pattern matters. One slow faucet tells a different story than weak pressure throughout the entire home.

A.J. LeBlanc Heating works through those possibilities in a practical order. We test the pressure, ask when the problem occurs, and check the parts of the system that can actually affect flow before recommending a repair.

Start with the pattern

If only one faucet or shower is weak, the problem is often close to that fixture. A clogged aerator, showerhead, cartridge, stop valve, or short section of piping can restrict flow without affecting the rest of the house. If several fixtures on one floor or branch are affected, the restriction may be farther back in the interior piping.

When pressure is weak everywhere, we look at the water source and the equipment serving the whole home. Useful questions include:

  • Is the pressure always low, or only when two fixtures run together?
  • Did the change happen suddenly or gradually?
  • Does the home use public water or a private well?
  • Does pressure rise and fall while the water is running?
  • Are neighbors seeing the same change?

Low pressure in a public-water home

Public-water pressure can vary with location, elevation, utility operations, and demand. Inside the home, a partly closed main valve, a failing pressure-reducing valve, a clogged filter, an old service component, leaking piping, or interior buildup can reduce the pressure that reaches the fixtures.

Static pressure is measured when no water is running. Flowing pressure shows what happens while the plumbing is being used. Comparing the two helps distinguish a generally low supply from a restriction that becomes obvious under demand. EPA WaterSense notes that residential fixtures generally perform best with incoming pressure in the 45 to 60 psi range, but the correct diagnosis still depends on the home and its plumbing.

If the available city-water pressure is genuinely too low for the home, a properly selected booster system may help. It should not be the first assumption. Installing a pump without identifying a closed valve, restricted pipe, bad regulator, or utility-side issue would leave the real problem unresolved.

Low pressure in a private-well home

A private-well system uses a pressure tank and pressure switch to keep water available within a set pressure range. Problems with the tank's air charge, internal bladder, pressure switch, gauge, fittings, controls, or house piping can cause pressure swings, rapid cycling, or weak flow.

Pipe size and simultaneous demand matter

Some homes have acceptable pressure with one fixture running but disappointing flow when a shower, washing machine, and irrigation connection operate together. That can point to a restriction, undersized piping, or demand that exceeds what the existing arrangement delivers comfortably.

Pressure and flow are related, but they are not the same measurement. Raising pressure does not automatically correct a pipe that cannot carry enough water. We consider both before discussing a regulator adjustment, piping correction, well-tank repair, or booster system.

Can a water filter reduce household pressure?

Yes. A loaded cartridge, restricted treatment tank, closed bypass valve, or improperly sized system can reduce flow. The filter should be checked rather than assumed to be the cause.

Will a booster pump fix every low-pressure problem?

No. A booster pump helps when the available city-water pressure is insufficient and the rest of the plumbing is suitable. It will not correct a partly closed valve, clogged piping, failing regulator, or fixture restriction.

Can a bad well tank cause pressure to fluctuate?

Yes. A failed bladder, incorrect air charge, pressure-switch problem, or related control issue can produce pressure swings or rapid cycling.
