What UV Water Treatment Does and Does Not Remove
Ultraviolet water treatment has one specific job. It uses UV light to disinfect flowing water by reducing microorganisms. It does not filter sediment, soften hard water, or remove dissolved minerals and chemicals.
That distinction matters when a homeowner is trying to solve more than one water concern. A.J. LeBlanc Heating uses independent laboratory results and the condition of the water to determine whether UV belongs in the treatment plan and what needs to happen before the water reaches it.
What residential UV treatment is designed to do
A properly selected and maintained UV system is used for microbiological treatment. Water passes through a chamber containing a UV lamp. The light delivers a dose intended to prevent target microorganisms from reproducing.
Performance depends on the equipment, flow rate, UV intensity, water clarity, installation, and maintenance. A UV unit should be selected and installed as a complete treatment device with the proper certification and operating requirements, not as a bare lamp added to a pipe.
What UV does not remove
UV treatment does not remove:
- Sand, rust, or other sediment
- Hardness minerals
- Iron or manganese
- Salt or total dissolved solids
- Most tastes and odors
- PFAS or other dissolved chemical contaminants
Those concerns require treatment designed for them. Depending on the laboratory report, that may include sediment filtration, oxidation and filtration, softening, activated carbon, or reverse osmosis.
Why pretreatment may be necessary
UV light must reach the water effectively. Sediment, color, iron, manganese, hardness scale, and other water characteristics can interfere with performance or foul the quartz sleeve that separates the lamp from the water.
Pretreatment is not identical in every home. One well may need only appropriate sediment filtration before UV. Another may require iron removal or softening first. The order matters because each stage is preparing the water for the next.
UV maintenance homeowners should expect
UV output decreases as a lamp ages even if the lamp still glows. Manufacturers specify lamp-replacement intervals and cleaning requirements for the quartz sleeve. Filters installed ahead of the UV chamber also need timely service.
Homeowners should respond to alarms rather than silencing them. An alarm can indicate reduced UV intensity, a lamp or power problem, or another condition that needs attention. After certain contamination events or plumbing work, the well and household piping may also require disinfection under appropriate guidance.
