100-Amp vs. 200-Amp Electrical Service: What NH Homeowners Should Know
A 200-amp electrical service can support more calculated load than a 100-amp service, but the number on the main breaker does not tell the entire story. Home size, heating fuel, major appliances, EV charging, backup heat, additions, and future plans all affect whether the existing service is suitable.

What the amp rating means
The service rating describes the maximum current the service equipment is designed to carry under its approved conditions. It is not a target for normal use, and household loads are not evaluated by adding every breaker handle together.
Electrical load calculations apply code rules and demand factors to the home's lighting, receptacles, appliances, heating, cooling, and other equipment. The calculation helps determine whether the service can support existing and proposed loads.
When 100-amp service may still be adequate
A 100-amp service may be suitable for a home with modest electrical demand, fuel-fired heating, and no large new loads planned. Condition matters just as much as capacity. A sound, properly installed panel with available capacity should not be replaced only to reach a larger number.
However, a 100-amp panel can become limiting when homeowners add electric heating, central air conditioning, an EV charger, electric cooking, a hot tub, a workshop, an addition, or other substantial equipment.
Why homeowners choose 200 amps
A 200-amp service can provide more room for electrification and future projects. It may simplify planning for multiple heat pumps, electric backup heat, vehicle charging, expanded living space, or several large appliances.
That does not mean every 200-amp panel has unlimited room. Existing load, breaker space, equipment condition, service conductors, meter equipment, and utility requirements still need to be checked.
A panel replacement is not always a service upgrade
Replacing the panel enclosure does not necessarily increase the amperage available from the utility. A full service upgrade may involve the meter equipment, service conductors, grounding and bonding, utility coordination, permits, and inspection in addition to the interior panel.
In other projects, the service capacity is adequate but the panel needs replacement because of condition, configuration, unavailable breaker types, or space. We explain the difference clearly in the proposal.
Planning for future projects
Homeowners do not have to predict every appliance they will ever own, but it helps to discuss the next several likely projects. If a heat pump, EV charger, addition, induction range, or heat pump water heater is being considered, evaluating them together can prevent duplicated work.

Is a 100-amp electrical service unsafe?
Not solely because it is 100 amps. Safety depends on condition, installation, protection, loading, and whether the equipment is suitable for the home.
Does a 200-amp panel lower my electric bill?
No. A larger service provides capacity. It does not reduce the energy used by the equipment connected to it.
Can I tell my service size from the main breaker?
The main breaker is an important clue, but a licensed electrician should confirm the ratings of the complete service equipment and conductors.
Can I add a subpanel instead of upgrading the service?
A subpanel can provide more circuit spaces, but it does not increase the total service capacity. It is useful only when the existing service has adequate calculated capacity.
Should I upgrade before installing an EV charger or heat pump?
Have the proposed equipment and existing load evaluated first. Many homes can complete the project without a service upgrade, while others need additional capacity.
