What are Bosch IDS Edge and Edge Max heat pumps?
Edge and Edge Max belong to Bosch's Inverter Ducted Split, or IDS, family. Bosch identifies both as systems built with VRF technology. VRF means variable refrigerant flow: the system can adjust refrigerant delivery as demand changes rather than relying only on full-output on/off operation.
You may hear this approach described as mini-VRF. It does not mean every installation uses a wall-mounted mini-split head. Bosch lists single-zone pairings with IDS Premium air handlers, cased coils and furnaces, plus compatible ducted and ductless indoor options for multi-zone designs. Edge vs. Edge Max: the cold-weather difference
For a New Hampshire project, low-temperature heating output deserves as much attention as a cooling-efficiency rating. Bosch's August 2026 specifications describe these differences:
- IDS Edge: listed heating operation down to -13°F, with up to 83% heating capacity at 5°F.
- IDS Edge Max: listed heating operation down to -22°F, with up to 100% heating capacity at 5°F.
These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a promise that every combination will cover every home's winter heating load. Ducted, ductless or a combination?
Start with the rooms you want to condition and the distribution system already in place. A house with usable ductwork presents a different design problem from an addition with no ducts or an upstairs that never reaches the thermostat setting.
