Older New Hampshire homes often have excellent boiler heat but no ductwork for central air conditioning. A ductless mini split can add cooling and efficient heat without installing a full duct system through finished rooms.

Why mini splits work well in homes without ductwork

Boilers deliver heat through radiators or baseboard piping, so there is no supply-and-return duct system available for air conditioning. Adding conventional ductwork may be practical in some homes, especially when an attic, basement, or renovation provides a clear route. In others, it would take too much space or require too much finish work.

A mini split connects one or more indoor units to outdoor equipment. Each indoor unit needs refrigerant piping, wiring, a condensate-drain route, and a suitable mounting location. That is far less invasive than building a complete duct system, but it is still a real installation that should be planned around the home's framing, plaster, trim, drainage, and exterior appearance.

Can you keep the boiler?

Yes. Adding a mini split does not automatically mean removing a working boiler. Many homeowners use ductless equipment for summer cooling and a large part of the heating season while keeping the boiler available for very cold weather, rooms outside the ductless zones, or personal comfort preference.

The right balance depends on the equipment and the home. Some qualifying cold-climate systems are designed to operate at outdoor temperatures of -13°F or below, but available heating capacity and efficiency are model-specific. We review the manufacturer's performance data and the home's heating needs instead of assuming every mini split performs the same way.

One indoor unit or several?

A single indoor unit is best when it serves an open area with a clear path for air movement. It should not be expected to cool several closed bedrooms through doorways. Homes with separate rooms may need multiple zones, a compact ducted unit, or a combination of indoor-unit styles.

Wall-mounted units are common because they provide strong airflow and flexible placement. Floor-mounted units may fit rooms with low knee walls or limited high-wall space. Compact ducted units can serve nearby rooms when there is room for short duct runs. Ceiling cassettes are another option when the framing and access allow them.

Planning around plaster, trim, and the outside of the home

Older houses deserve careful layout work. We plan indoor-unit height, piping routes, condensate drainage, outdoor-unit placement, and line-cover locations before installation begins. The goal is a clean installation that respects the room and remains accessible for service.

Every project still requires openings and fastening points, and some layouts may need limited finish work. We explain the proposed route before the work starts so the homeowner understands what will be visible inside and outside.

Does the electrical panel need an upgrade?

Mini split equipment normally requires a dedicated electrical circuit. Whether the existing panel can support it depends on the equipment, the home's existing electrical load, and the available panel capacity.

When electrical work is part of the project, we can evaluate the service, install the required circuit, and complete a panel upgrade when the home actually needs one. What does a mini split installation cost?

Frequently asked questions

Can one mini split cool an entire older home?

Sometimes one unit can serve an open floor plan, but air does not move reliably through closed doors and separated rooms. The number and location of indoor units should be based on the home's layout and heating and cooling needs.

Will a mini split damage plaster walls?

The installation requires mounting points and a route for piping, wiring, and drainage. Careful planning can limit disturbance, but it would be misleading to promise that every installation requires no finish work.

Can a mini split heat during a New Hampshire winter?

Cold-climate models are designed for low-temperature operation. The amount of heat available at a particular outdoor temperature depends on the exact model and system design. We verify the performance data and discuss whether the existing boiler should remain available.

Should I remove my boiler after adding mini splits?

Not automatically. A working boiler can remain as backup or continue serving areas outside the ductless zones. The best operating plan depends on the home, equipment, fuel costs, and homeowner preference.

Can a 100-amp electrical service support a mini split?

It may, but the answer depends on the equipment and the home's total electrical load. Our licensed electricians evaluate the existing service and recommend an upgrade only when the project requires one.
